Dr. Sutapa Majumdar

Sutapa is a sociologist and an economist by training. She holds a PhD in Economics from the Department of Economics, University of Pune. Her doctoral research explored the survival strategies of women working in the unorganized labour markets in India with specific focus on sex workers, beauty workers and traditional embroidery workers located in different parts of the country. Having had a Masters and M. Phil degree in Sociology with specialization in gender, she has over a decade of experience working in the development sector on issues of Gender, Health, Sexuality, HIV/AIDS, urban consumption and the Indian labour market. In particular, she has been working very closely with sex workers – male, female and transgender and other sexually marginalized communities across the country and has been traveling extensively in the South East Asian region for research and advocacy on sex work and Human Rights.
